Why I Now Recommend Traveling With a Carbon Monoxide Detector

Travel is about experiences.
Memories.
Connection.

But lately, I’ve been hearing far too many tragic stories involving carbon monoxide poisoning in hotels and vacation rentals — both international and right here in the U.S.Hotels are not federally required to place carbon monoxide detectors in every guest room.

Let that sink in.

And while we can’t control everything when we travel, we can control what we pack.

So from this point forward, I recommend that travelers consider bringing a portable carbon monoxide detector when staying in hotels, resorts, or Airbnbs.

Why This Matters

Carbon monoxide (CO) is:

  • Colorless

  • Odorless

  • Invisible

You cannot see it.
You cannot smell it.
You cannot taste it.

And hotel guests often have no warning until it’s too late!

By the time symptoms appear, it can already be dangerous.

While many properties have safety measures in place, regulations vary by location, building age, and country. Not every property is inspected the same way. Not every system functions properly.

Travelers often assume:

“The hotel will handle that.”

But safety layers are smart — especially when traveling with:

  • Children

  • Elderly family members

  • Couples on romantic getaways

  • Group trips

The Simple Solution: Travel with a Portable CO Detector

A portable carbon monoxide detector is:

  • Small (fits in a carry-on or personal item)

  • Affordable ($20–$40)

  • Easy to use (battery-powered or rechargeable)

  • Potentially life-saving

Place it near your bed or close to the bathroom—anywhere you’ll hear it if it alarms while sleeping.

This is especially critical for:

  • Families traveling with children

  • Couples on romantic getaways

  • Cruises pre/post hotel stays

  • International travel

  • Airbnb & vacation rentals

What To Look For in a Travel Carbon Monoxide Detector

If you’re purchasing one specifically for travel, I recommend:

✔️ Battery operated (no plug required)
✔️ Lightweight & portable
✔️ Certified (UL listed preferred)
✔️ Digital display (helpful but optional)
✔️ Some models combine smoke + carbon monoxide detection

These are small enough to fit easily in a carry-on.
